Before the plumber arrives

Where is my main water shut-off valve?

Usually where the water line enters the house: in the garage, near the water heater, in a crawl space or on an outside wall facing the street. Step-by-step help: how to shut off your main water valve.

Should I turn off the water heater when the water is off?

If the main water valve will be off for more than a short time, yes: turn an electric heater’s breaker off or set a gas heater to Off.

Can I fix it myself until help arrives?

You can limit damage: shut off water, contain leaks, move belongings and, for small splits on exposed pipe, use a repair clamp. Leave repairs to gas lines, sewer lines and water heaters to a licensed plumber.

What if the problem is in the street?

Call the utility first. Augusta Utilities after hours: 706-842-3060. Columbia County Water Utility after hours: 706-860-2587. Details: who fixes water and sewer line leaks.

Costs, insurance and permits

Does homeowners insurance cover plumbing emergencies?

Many policies cover sudden water damage from a burst pipe, but not worn-out pipes or slow leaks, and sewer backup damage often needs a separate add-on. See burst pipes and home insurance.

Do I need a permit for an emergency repair?

Small repairs usually do not. Larger jobs, like replacing a water heater, a water service line or a sewer line, often need a permit and inspection, which the licensed plumber handles.

Why do night and weekend calls cost more?

Plumbers working outside normal hours usually charge more, and during a freeze demand is high. See emergency plumber cost in Augusta.

Safety

Is sewage in the house dangerous?

Yes. It carries bacteria and viruses. Keep people and pets away, wear gloves and boots, and clean with disinfectant. See sewer backup causes and cleanup.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the building, do not use switches or phones inside, and call 911 and Atlanta Gas Light at 877-427-4321 from outside. Do not go back in until the utility says it is safe.

Can I use electricity near standing water?

No. Switch off breakers for the wet area only if you can reach the panel from a dry spot; otherwise stay out and call for help.
